The Function Of Your Vehicle’s Fuel System

The Function Of Your Vehicle’s Fuel System

The Function Of Your Vehicle’s Fuel System

Everyone knows the engine is the heart of your vehicle. Any vehicle owner should want to take proper care of their vehicle in general, but more specifically the engine. Well, in order to do that, you also have to take proper care of the fuel system. One of the biggest parts of your vehicles engine, and what makes it run, is fuel. That is why the fuel system is so important. If something affects the fuel that should flow to your engine, is going to cause a poor performance from your vehicle, or even something more serious, like your engine failing to run completely.

If you have a fuel system service performed regularly it will help to ensure that your vehicle’s in general has a longer and better lifespan, as well as improve performance, and increase fuel economy. If you neglect to have your fuel system serviced, it could become heavily clogged with dirt, debris, and many other particles. This could lead to some very serious and severe problems, like low or poor acceleration, and ultimately some very serious problems with the engine. Having your vehicles fuel system serviced also helps improve fuel economy, which ultimately, will reduce your vehicle’s carbon footprint.

What is a Fuel Injector?

Now that we’ve generally discussed your fuel system, we’ll go a bit more in depth to one of the main parts of your fuel system, your fuel injectors. Your fuel injectors are key to making your engine and vehicle run smoothy and efficiently. These injectors are essentially valves that are electronically operated that are part of the complex fuel system which, when performing properly, provides accurate fuel tracking. This means that when you step on the gas, the injector transfers the exact amount of fuel to the engine. To put it another way, the fuel injectors are highly pressurized, so they pump the fuel through either an electronically controlled or fixed aperture, to the engine as a light cone-shaped spray. The reason for this light cone-shaped spray, is that it is easier to ignite than a thick solid stream, and it burns more efficiently. The more fuel the engine needs, the longer the valves will stay open.

Problems with Fuel Systems

Interesting, right? Well, here’s some unfortunate news. Because the fuel burns, eventually, deposits begin to build up in the fuel injectors, and most of the system completely, which will, in turn, affect the performance significantly. Because these injectors become so clogged, they begin not being able to turn the fuel into a fine mist, and instead turn it into a sporadic dribble. Some of the main signs that this is happening include, but are not limited to, poor idle, rough engine performance, not reaching full RPM, the need for more fuel, failed emissions and bucking, and surging under various throttle loads. Because these injectors are so complex, it is vital that you have your fuel system serviced regularly to ensure that your vehicle runs efficiently.

How Often Should the Fuel System Be Cleaned?

We keep saying that it is very important that you get your fuel system regularly serviced. You’rre probably wondering, how often is that exactly? Well, we usually would recommend doing it every year to avoid any of the major issues we talked about above with your vehicle. However, you also can, and should, check your owner’s manual to see what your vehicle’s manufacturer recommends. The fuel filter should be replaced every 30,000 miles. However, if a lot of contaminants get into your fuel, you may need to have the system completely flushed.
